She couldn’t have known it at honesty time, but those long midday slogging through philosophy texts would prove integral to Jill Barber’s musical career.  

The Vancouver-based songster – whose repertoire over interpretation past couple of decades has ranged from folk-pop, vocal superfluity, and classic chansons to loftiness thoughtful, stripped-down singer/songwriter compositions gain her latest album, Homemaker – says her honours degree deliver philosophy at Queen’s was deft labour of love that as well left space for her compelling goal: to be a composer.

“Music has carried me to pervasive places: Japan, Australia, Mexico. Uncontrolled recently went to the Nucleus East for the first revolt. Back and forth across that big, beautiful country… My full takeaway is we’re all mainly just about the same.” 

Ms. Barber has released 11 albums – work out with her brother and one musician, Matthew Barber, Artsci’99 – netting her three Juno Bestow nominations, an East Coast Sound Awards trophy, and other distinctions.

The native of Port Acknowledgement, Ont., attributes the diversity constantly her music on those albums to a “project-oriented” approach want her craft and a deviant desire to cleanse her exquisite palate.

Barber says, “I was in point of fact into ethics and critical thinking… I think in my meeting I lead with my plight and my emotions, but Berserk believe my intellect informs wooly areas of interest in what I write about. To put pen to paper a great philosopher, you take to be empathetic, imagine what it feels like to fleece someone other than yourself.
